The Studio Series is a periodic, evolving project that unites perfumery, writing, and art, in an exploration and analysis of the processes and phenomena of fragrance.
First, it provides perfume collectors with wearable perfumes-in-progress, as the perfumer experiences themself. Each vial samples a different moment in the chronology of an evolving fragrance composition, each an opportunity to enjoy the mostly secret variations which fragrances go through before completion. This reveals a unique narrative rarely found in perfumery.
Second, each set features original writing and artwork, presenting different perspectives on a theme, commissioned from collaborators who hold sharp views in and outside the perfume community.
Studio Series 11 features iterations of the forthcoming Timbre-Io Remix and a sprayer sample of Relief, a new special edition eau de parfum which is the completion of the Involuntary Catharsis Project that premiered in Studio Series 10.
An essay by author Tracy Wan titled "How to disappear into ourselves" on perfume, control, augmented reality, and life in a pandemic was commissioned for this set, and will be printed as a multimedia-risographic zine by Stephen Grebinski of Misfeed Press. The zine will featuring winning photographs from a crowdsourced contest on the theme of relief.
Lastly, an essay I write about my processes, called Studio Wafts, rounds out the experience. Studio Waft 11 is now live.
Studio Series 10 contains the first six iterations of Relief, an essay, "Notes on the History of Perfumery", by independent perfumer Carter Weeks Maddox of Chronotope Perfumes, illustrated as a zine by artist Somnath Bhatt.
